Procamera's image size was 14.7mb and extremely detailed, sharper and better exposed. One image came out as a 4.5mb HEIC from the default camera. I ran side by side comparison test shots between the default app and other apps and analysed the images. I've done a lot of testing since I discovered this problem and using a different app was the only answer. Even when you put it into HEIC mode the file sizes are far bigger than normal HEIC files and the quality and detail in the image far higher. One solution I found is to use an app called Procamera. I was very disappointed having come from a Pixel XL that took very detailed photos even when zoomed in. I think it's to do with the HEIC format and the file sizes being so low. Try it with a pic of a lawn and you'll see what I mean. Photos look great until you apply even the slightest bit of zoom, at which point they turn into an over processed mush that looks awful. If you have a lot of storage on your phone, sometimes it's best to enable the option to keep both the HDR and the non-HDR version.Įdit- clarify Google Photos resolution reduction Here's a same photo of my dog- one without HDR and the other one with: HDR photos also tends to look grainier because of the added contrast. The less lighting there is the higher the ISO which usually results in added graininess. Google Photos reduce the resolution (if it's over 16MP which iPhone X photos are not as they're 12MP) but it doesn't compress the photos)-īut back to the your photo: I'm guessing the reason for the graininess is the mixed lighting in the image especially the fact that your dog is in the shadow. If you using Google Photos- link to the image. Imgur compresses upload images so that image you've included may not be the best way for others to use to judge image quality.
